COMPUTING

INTENT

A high-quality computing education equips children to use computational thinking and creativity to understand, challenge and change the world. At Barnack, we ensure that pupils become digitally literate and are able to express themselves as active participants in a technologically advanced world.

CURRICULUM OBJECTIVES

 We aim to ensure children:

  • can understand and apply the fundamental principles of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation;

  • can analyse problems in computational terms and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs;

  • can evaluate and apply information technology to solve problems;

  • are competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology;

  •  are responsible for themselves and others’ safety when using all forms of technology.

  • can use and apply their computing skills across other areas of the curriculum for a variety of purposes and audiences.

IMPLEMENTATION

To ensure we have coverage of the Computing Curriculum we use the Barefoot Computing scheme to support our planning and teaching. Staff have received training from Barefoot to support this. Barefoot covers Computer Science teaching as well as some aspects of Information Technology and Digital Literacy. To supplement this we also use Google Be Internet Legends planning resource and teach Online Safety throughout the curriculum. Furthermore, as a school we celebrate Online Safety Day each year.

A group of Year 5/6 children are Digital Leaders who are involved in supporting staff and children in school using technology. They lead the Online Safety assembly each year as well as gathering pupil voice feedback using online surveys.

IMPACT

As well as developing knowledge and skills relating to the curriculum to prepare children for the next stage in education. Children will be comfortable is selecting when and how to effectively use ICT to support their work across the curriculum.
